Graphic design is probably one of the more challenging types of art in today’s world dominated by social media. If you’re not on the top of your game, you can easily get left behind especially since the design trends change almost all the time.

To keep your clients happy, you have to at least be aware of some of the latest trends in typography, design, color, and even fashion or music! In this colorful (pun-intended) world of advertising and media, here are some top trends to keep you inspired and up-to-the-minute:

Colors

A good source of inspiration for color is the quarterly report from Pantone (as seen in the photo above). Since it’s now fall season, it’s quite ideal to use fall-inspired colors for designs. These colors often grab plenty of attention more now than it would for the rest of the year. You can even try holiday-inspired schemes like Halloween colors or Christmas colors, especially if you or your client has specials or promos related to those occasions.

Typography

As mentioned before in one of my previous posts, typography alone can create a high impact ad or change the look of an entire design with just the use of simple ingenious fonts and colors. Right now, simple block types without serifs seem to be all the rage, along with handwritten fonts, either of which would look great against a flat design.

Retro Graphics

Sometimes, the irony of old styles in modern times creates a very effective contrast. If you have been noticing in recent years, poster styles that were made famous in the 70s and 80s seem to be more popular again. They’re usually just simple graphics with bold colors, or even a faded “old” look a la Instagram filters.

Illustrations

People are visual creatures, so it’s easy to grab attention with simple but meaningful illustrations. These were very popular last year, and they’re not fading out anytime soon. Whether it’s for web, clothing, or print, illustrated graphics make things look fresh and cool in a way stock photos simply couldn’t.

Infographics

Similar to illustrations, infographics are customized but highly effective. They often communicate statistics, or even funny pieces of information, in a visually stimulating manner. Businesses can reach their audiences in an engaging way using simple drawings, charts, and graphs that nearly anyone can easily understand.
