World renowned Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn has recently unveiled “Support,” his most recent work featured at the 2017 Venice Art Biennale. Tackling the issue of global warming and raising awareness about it, the monumental artwork can be seen at the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel.

Famous for using parts of the human body often in his work (from the miniscule like his jewelry work, to the supermassive sculptures he creates), the artist’s latest project is just one more to add to that list. The two gigantic hands that comprise the sculpture rise from a canal to “support” the hotel it’s located by. It acts as a visual message that people need to really take global warming seriously before it’s too late.

In an interview with Halcyon Gallery, Lorenzo Quinn discussed how while Venice is an inspirational floating art city that’s lasted for hundreds of years, future generations will have a hard time enjoying it when the city gets affected badly by both climate change and time decay.

Lorenzo Quinn tackles both the positive and negative sides of the human: we as a species have a creative yet destructive power to make change. As such, we can rebalance the world around us, and this sculpture reflects that.

“I wanted to sculpt what is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body,” he said of his latest influential creation. “The hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy.”

On his Facebook page, he released a statement thanking the city of Venice and its mayor Luigi Brugnaro for the trust and belief in him and the project: “so happy to say mission accomplished … I hope my art brings a new focus of attention to a global calamity that we are faced with.”

“Support” and the Venice Art Biennale will run from May 13 to November 26.
