Photography is one of the most common mediums of artistic expression in today’s very digital age. However, there will always be artists who tend to do more than just point and shoot with their camera – people like Mikko Lagerstedt take things to an entirely different level with his stunning night shots.

A self-taught photographer based in Kareva, Finland, Mikko takes shots that will inspire you to either take up photography too or at least step outside and check out the beautiful night sky we often take for granted. He would describe is his style as, “capturing places with unique vision,” and unique it is!

What inspired him to take up photography, especially night photography? “After a rainy day, the sun started shining, and the fog was rising in the fields,” Mikko recalls. “I just had to stop and watch this beautiful moment and then I realized that I want to start capturing these kinds of moments.”

In addition, the atmospheric style of his shots actually comes from something much deeper and more personal.  “Losing my best friend when I turned 20, has definitely influenced my work and how I see things surrounding us,” he confesses.

He says that things look different at night, so taking shots when the sun is gone allows him to capture unique-looking landscapes – some eerie looking, while others are just enchanting. In addition, night time also allowed him to experience odd moments that not a lot of people are able to experience.

“I have run into a moose and a deer, it was quite scary and funny at the same time. I also saw a lynx crossing a road. It was one of those moments that make you really appreciate what you do,” he laughs.

And while he shoots mostly in Europe, he believes every place has their own unique perks. “In Greece, for example, the Milky Way is much more visible than in Finland, so it’s easier to capture a high-quality photograph.”

He started in December of 2008 and hasn’t stopped since. “Since then I fell in love with it. I am constantly trying to find new ways to view this world.”
