They say, “When life throws you lemons, make lemonade.” Carolina Breeze, a filmmaking student, saw that come to life in her father’s work. The 23-year-old student’s dad started making jewelry created from scrap metal, and she herself was surprised with what her 45-year-old pops could do. Based in Tel-Aviv, Israel, Carolina tells of how her dad still continued being creative after a financial rut hit them out of nowhere.

“About a year ago, (he) came to me and showed me a piece of jewelry he made out of scrap metal,” she recalls. “The jewelry junkie inside me felt like my world had just turned upside down. It was a big pendant made out of copper wire from an old radio combined with some ugly beads he took from an old piece of my jewelry.”

“My father had never made jewelry before, and there it was, simple yet perfect and annoyingly beautiful,” she tells of the first piece her dad showed her. “I was full of surprise, admiration and love for my father who just lost his job but still remained a creative person that never stopped using his hands to bring some beauty and magic to the world.”

“From that day on we’ve been designing different types of pendants, earrings and bracelets, all inspired by mythology, ancient cultures, Indian tribes, Celtic symbols, etc.,” Carolina says. “My father is a real modern polymath: he draws beautifully with both hands, carves sculptures out of wood, used to be a tattoo artist for a while and now, he makes beautiful jewelry.”

Now a father-daughter team, the pair have set up shop selling their creations in their own Etsy store, which they call Calisto Jewelry. Each piece is truly unique, and according to them won’t ever be duplicated. They even accept requests for customized designs and special orders. What a way for parent-child bonding!

Looking at these pieces, you’d never guess they’re made from scrap, and you probably won’t believe they basically just started doing these last year – the craftsmanship is astounding and the results are nothing short of amazing. I know I’d love to have some of these pieces myself.
