We’ve covered a few illustrators who use colored pencil in their art, including those who do hyperrealism like Marcello Barenghi and Jose Vergara, as well as artists like Yaseen and Erik Jones. Recently someone who caught our attention is an artist named Eric Michael Hancock.

Based in Wisconsin, Eric uses graphite on paper so he can detail as many textures and shapes. According to his bio, his aim is to “join other talented artists in the galleries, on the walls, and inside printed pages.” And that he has successfully done, with a number of gallery shows, exhibitions, and publications already under his belt since 2009.

The artist was originally from Green Bay, which is famous for its football team the Packers. While his disinterest in the sport made him feel ignored or snubbed, he was able to find his passion in the arts and get a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

As for his style of working, Eric of course has his own routine. With his works heavily influenced by all sorts of writing and media such as classic fairy tales, mythologies, cryptozoology, and components of classic and contemporary cinema, it’s no strange thing that he sometimes even plays audio books during his process.

The artist works from home in his suburban Milwaukee apartment, using mostly his graphite pencils but also dabbles in paint from time to time. He even has a section on his website where he rates the pencils he likes to use, naming the discontinued Papermate ProTouch II .5mm as his absolute favorite, with a 12 out of 10 rating.
