Earlier this month, The Art Elephant was fortunate to attend the opening event for The La Jolla Gallery, an exclusive creative art space located in one of the Southern California’s historic venues.

So what’s it like to open your own gallery in the heart of a beloved ocean front community?

We sat down with the Elisabeth King, co-owner and curator for San Diego’s newest gallery to find out what efforts went into developing the beautiful space.

The gallery, located in the Green Dragon Colony is one of the oldest buildings on the La Jolla Shores. With a cottage-like structure and a contemporary feel, the unique space features a “Collectors Lounge” complete with ocean views, refreshments and the latest in Apple TV technology where visitors can view extended collections.

“La Jolla is a mecca for galleries here in San Diego and the village provides that small intimate setting for collectors and vacationers,” King said.

King grew up as a child of an Old Masters Painter/Gallery Owner in Santa Cruz and was surrounded by an array of artists as well as her talented siblings.

She received her B.A. in Art History from the University California Santa Barbara and a forged an extensive career in Fine Art Consulting.

She was fortunate to experience the world of corporate curatorship, both nationally and internationally.

“The excitement and passion obtained from that position, coupled with the level of education in the masters, brought me to ultimately open The La Jolla Gallery and be an advocate for the collection of contemporary artists…ultimately the Warhols of tomorrow,” she said.

It was a lifelong goal to establish her own distinctive gallery and thanks to her close friend Jack McGrory, she was able to extend her dream into a reality on the shores of La Jolla.

Once the location was secured, the next step was figuring out what specific pieces / artists would best represent the progressive space.

King sifted through hundreds of artists, utilizing her deep roots in the art community to discover what she considers some of the most “unique and progressive” pieces in Southern California’s art community.

The opening night featured 9 different artists, live music and private catering by San Diego’s premiere Chef Indo Reyes.

Some of TAE’s favorite picks from the evening included:

“We truly care about our artist’s work and their presentation. Being an art historian and curator – my staff and I are able to properly give the collector the stories about the artists and their works, techniques and applications. We also don’t just sell artwork, we create an entire experience where a family relationship is created for a lifetime,” King said.

“The selection of artists boasts some of the most accomplished in the art world, so it was imperative that the placement of works both make sense and fit into the wall spaces provided. The result is a gallery that is welcoming, progressive and truly one of a kind.”
