Ukrainian photographer Vyacheslav Mishchenko shoots wonderful macro photos that are so enchanting they’ll make you think twice whether they’re real or not. Going by the nickname Slava, he’s made a name for himself online originally taking photographs of snails up close. This time around, he’s shifted the focus toward mushrooms (with a bit of snail detail every now and then) which are in season at the moment.

He wrote in an art site that his passion for mushrooms and photography in general was inspired by his father. Slava says he also loves nature, and that he’s “lucky … to see nature as a special, dreamlike world.” He then translates what he sees and feels into the photos we see in his portfolio, hoping to give its viewers the same magical feeling he experiences.

“Early in the morning, when I am somewhere between dreams and reality, the camera’s viewfinder creates a sense of presence in some incredibly beautiful and mysterious world,” he described. “These Little Heroes are like aliens from other planets. Even ordinary mushrooms have elegant and delicate shapes. I invite you to an exciting journey with me and my viewfinder to experience a new world of mushrooms.”

And while the current series focuses mainly on mushrooms, he also often captures other creatures like his trademark snails, as well as lizards, ladybugs, frogs, ants, spiders, and other miniscule details that surround the colorful fungi.
