We’ve always known Japan to be one of the best places to explore creativity and expression. With cities like Tokyo leading the world in technology, it’s nice to know that this is a country that embraces it ancient culture just as much as they open themselves to infinite modern possibilities. That’s the reason I got so excited when I found out about their manhole covers! Not only are they intricately designed, but they are also painted in elaborate colors and styles, which make for unique street art you can only find there.

I recently stumbled onto a Flickr group called “Japanese Manhole Covers” that has almost 4,000 pictures of these painted beauties. They started in April of 2006, with almost 800 contributing members worldwide. I’d love to visit Japan and see some of these in person! Take a look at these photos:
