Since we just came from our Fourth of July weekends, I figured TAE should feature unusual firework photography. I found David Johnson a.k.a. Davey J, and he is a photographer whose unusual technique will capture your attention. This Canadian loves to take pictures of nearly everything, from people to nature, from the animate to the inanimate.
His shots of fireworks are so amazing you’ll have to take a second look to believe they’re not computer generated. Using one of his signature Canon cameras and a bit of experimentation, he’s able to shoot pictures so crazily unique, it’s inspiring!
Instead of long light trails across the night sky, which we all love anyway, his pictures look like fractals and flowers. “The technique I used was a simple refocus during the long exposure,” he explains. “The shapes are quite bizarre, some of them I was pleasantly surprised with.”
Interestingly, he starts taking pictures out of focus. As the explosion happens, he would then quickly refocus, resulting in what you’ll see here:
