Face as a Canvas
Usually, makeup artists perfect their art of bringing out the best features of a person, but 19-year-old Stephanie Fernandez has other ideas. Instead of finding that right shade of blush or lipstick, or perfecting that eyeliner or smokey-eyed look, she uses her face or those of her model friends as a canvas for insanely good creations.
Her out-of-this-world face paintings are colorful and somewhat creepy at times, which is bizarrely hypnotizing. Not surprisingly, her style is often influenced by music she listens to. “Most of my makeup is heavily influenced by music. I love to be able to create and see what I am hearing and feeling. I simply see it in my mind’s eye, and my hands do the rest,” she said in an interview.
But that’s not all that inspires her – her self-described colorfully creepy designs are also because of darker influences. “The gory and creepy side of my style is influenced by my passion for horror movies and psychological thrillers,” she explained.
The Louisiana-based makeup artist started the project as an experiment on makeup, which eventually became her career inspiration. “I would love to do high-fashion makeup for NYC Fashion Week. I would love to have at least 100 art shows before I die. I would love to direct movies and creative direct music videos as well as open a studio to create SFX masks, canvas pieces and explore other media. I have no limits. My mind is constantly moving. I want to do it all.”
